Get Your Locks Changed In Portland, OR Today!!

While homeowners go far and beyond to invest in high-tech home security systems that come with all the latest bells and whistles, what most of them tend to forget is that their homes’ main line of defense lies in the locks. Locks not only help to keep hard-earned possessions secured, but they also help to keep lives safe. Therefore, changing locks, especially those on exterior doors, should be as essential and routine as any other maintenance job you do around your home. Speaking of changing locks, when should you change your locks or what circumstances can trigger the need for you to change them? Well, here are the main circumstances that warrant a lock update:

When you move to a new house

New HouseAfter buying or moving to a new house, you’ll have a lot of things on your mind, from unpacking and decorating your new house, to mortgage payments and how to deal with new neighbors. Woe unto you if you forget to address your new residence’s security! Besides the keys presented to you by your realtor or landlord, there’s no way of knowing how many spare copies of the key are out there. Therefore, changing your locks could be a good way of ensuring that all those who may have a key are barred from entering your house.

When you lose your keys

lost keysWhether you’ve accidentally lost your house keys or had them stolen, it’s vital to have your door locks changed as soon as possible. Even if the lost keys will be returned by a seemingly good Samaritan, you wouldn’t know if copies of the key were made prior to their return to your hands. Therefore, it would be wise if you make it a priority to have your locks changed just to be on the safe side.

When it’s an insurance requirement

Besides you and your loved ones, there’s another entity that hopes your home stays safe at all times – your insurance company. There are those insurance companies that will require your home to have locks that meet certain standards. So, if your present locks do not meet these standards, you may be required to replace them with those that are compliant with your insurance.

When your locks are damaged

Just like anything else within your home, locks are susceptible to damage. In order for them to stay effective, they’ll need a little bit of maintenance. After several years, locks may eventually fail and become a liability to your overall home security. If this is the case, then it’s prudent to have them replaced before burglars realize that there’s a weak link that they can take advantage of. Furthermore, locks that are damaged or difficult to work with are more likely to lock you out of your very own house.

After there’s a home burglary

Home burglaryIf burglars find their way into your home anyway, you may not necessarily be worried about some spare copies of your door keys being on the wrong hands. What you should be more concerned about is the potential damage that might have been caused to the existing door locks. So, after making a phone call to the police and another to your insurance agent, make sure that the other call you will make will be to your local locksmith asking to have your locks changed.

After your roommate(s) leave

If you have been sharing your room or house with another person and he/she happens to leave for good, then the same rule applies – change the locks! If you don’t, then don’t be too surprised if one day you return home and find out that your ex-roommate or a close acquaintance of his/hers held a party at your residence without notice.

After going through a bitter divorce

They say that “hell hath no fury than a woman scorned”. Well, men too don’t like to have their ego scathed. Whichever side of the fence you’re sitting on, it would be wise on your part to have your locks changed after going through a bitter separation or divorce. You might not know when your fuming ex-partner will storm into your house and leave an “indelible mark” on it and on your heart forever.

Whether you have experienced any of the above situations or not, it’s a good idea to have your locks changed every few years. As technology changes, locks can become obsolete such that they impair your overall home security. If you intend to protect your home and safeguard the possessions that are within it, it’s best that you accept to make changes around your home, including those that pertain to your locks.
